I think in that appeal, the audience this series is geared for is probably middle to high school students. That said, this scholarly review of JiM suggests that it actually does mangsland some factual errors; I haven’t read it myself, so I’ll leave it for others to comment on that, but it’s something to consider.

I’m relatively new to learning Japanese and I find it difficult to read off of a computer screen and I heard about the Japanese in Mangaland series. It looks like JiM is arranged in the traditional textbook style, where each lesson contains some grammar and some vocab mixed together to teach you a certain concept; for instance, apparently there’s a chapter about days of the week, days of the month, and months. Its clear explanations and vivid examples help one naturally to get the “feel” for the basic patterns of Japanese grammar and at the same time to remember vocabulary associated with concret An alternate cover edition can be found here.

The book also has two special exercise parts — one at the end of each level — as well as indexes of kanji and reading. Compared to Genki, I think the biggest failures are the order of things taught and what is taught. After having gone through college and taking Japanese classes there, I went through the Genki series, and if yo I got this book back when I was self studying Japanese in high school. Its clear explanations and vivid examples help one naturally to get the “feel” for the basic patterns of Japanese grammar and at the same time to remember vocabulary associated with concrete situations.

And a beginner who might pick Japanese in Mangaland thinking it will be easy, is probably making the mistaken but reasonable assumption that the book would at least start with manga written for a childrens’ reading level.

Japanese in Mangaland: Basic Japanese Course Using Manga

A lot of the grammar seems to be put aside for vocab, and there are a LOT of kanji, which is not great for beginners. I’ve never seen those in other Japanese learning textbooks. Anyways, overall a fun read. And as a final complaint, despite this being a Second Edition, there are small mistakes throughout the book. An exciting special feature — 24 pages of a Rakujo manga created exclusively for this workbook mangalamd further enhances the learning experience.
